The first author to respond back is Meridian. She is the Queen of the Betas for my group, and an awesome author in her own right.
She is nicknamed in my group as the Muse Whisperer, and she is easily responsible for a lot of the stories I have. And she begs to have my brain when I am done with it. Not to sure what she is going to do with it.
This week and until I am done, I will be doing reviews of her stories. Meet Meridian, and get to know her!
Can you please tell the people reading this your name?
Meridian – used to be InvertedMeridian, but we (myself and I) very quickly tired of being inverted.
Where do you like to post, and can you give us the site of your preferred medium?
I started my “fic career” posting over on FanFiction, but their spineless worship of rabid censor-nuns led me to WordPress (http://addicted2godric.wordpress.com) – my preferred posting site because I can spice up my site with lots of pics, gifs, and different menu headings. I also post on TWCS, AO3, and FictionPad.
What do you prefer, Tea or Coffee?
I am a coffee addict from way back when. I’ll drink some tea once in a while (Jasmine Green for health, Chai blends for taste), but coffee’s where it’s at, bay-be.
What is your favorite beverage of choice? And if alcoholic and mixed, what are the ingredients?
Frangelico, White Russian or Tom Collins depending on mood, and there have been quite a few LIITs in my past (and, srsly, how DO they end up tasting like tea?)
What is your funny story about trying something to drink and it rocked your boat and/or sucked?
Long ago and far away, some friends and I were hanging around and trying not too very hard to become slowly inebriated. I’m not a huge fan of whisky or vodka (I know, but it CAN happen…), so I hauled my not-drunk butt to the ABC store and perused the 1-Shot sampler bottles, gathered up a few, and went back. During the course of the evening, I found the drink I will love forever, but damn if I can remember the name – all I remember is that it tasted like Juicy Fruit chewing gum.
What foods do you love?
I love American, Italian, Chinese, and Southern foods, and I freely admit to being particularly fond of salty grease. (Think bacon, y’all.)
What is your go to food for comfort?
The blood of my enemies. Or, since it’s usually handier, chicken noodle soup with too many crackers or a grilled cheese sandwich with triple extra cheese and ketchup.
What do you like to snack when writing?
I actually try not to snack when I’m writing because my elbow keeps bending, my waistline keeps expanding, and I don’t want my mouse/keyboard to get all gross, but if I do, I go for popcorn, Fritos, generic salty snacks…
Is there a scent that says home to you?
Animal farts. Srsly, I have 2 cats and a doggie. Lol, I’m a perfume aficionado – the good stuff, mind you – so my house always has a very light whiff of something nice in the air. There’s that blend of “woodsy”, “exotic”, and “floral” tones from my perfumes, then there’s coffee, Gain laundry detergent, cotton, bacon, toast, cigarette smoke, leather from jackets and shoes/boots, cat and dog treats (those things have a STRONG scent), the “fresh/dirt” scent from indoor plants, and cleaning products (Lysol – the stuff in the brown bottle and the spray, and bleach, usually, but sometimes Pine Sol, too).
Is there a scent you wish you never smelled ever?
Rye toast and Brussels’ sprouts – either/or…they make me want vomit. Or whatever it was that died, resurrected, reproduced, then died again in the back of my fridge last week.
If you could visit a place, anywhere, where would it be?
Right now, I would love to go back to Dinard, France, or Arad in the Negev Desert (either/or!) and sit on a rooftop with a pot of strong, hot coffee and a pitcher of milk, (and a cup because I’m picky like that) and watch the sun rise. I love watching a new day dawn over a sea of either water or sand.
If you could go at any point in time, which would it be?
I’d go back and tell Hitler’s mom to swallow.
What music do you like?
I mostly listen to different alternatives, some rock, and some instrumental.
Is there a genre or song you hate?
I fervently detest country, rap, and jazz.
Tell us something about yourself that you think your fans would love to know about you:
Fans? I have fans?? *glances around happily*
Huh, I can’t think of anything that anyone would want to know about me that I haven’t spoken about to the point that they’re sick of hearing it already. For a private person I’m amazingly vocal.
(climbs on soapbox) I’m violently opposed to the subjugation and degradation of women, well, of anyone really, but some fanfics and some fiction publishers seem determined to try to convince people that woman should be disrespected, demeaned, and debased. Unfortunately for my peace of mind, abuse is abuse no matter the excuse, whether it’s in real life or hidden in a fanfic. I also can’t stand when writers decide to make the “hero” of their fic some sort of Dom (if he has to order his “heroine” around in bed to get off, then maybe he needs a different lover) or have a “dominating” character (wow – his penis is THAT small?). It not only makes me roll my eyes and laugh, but also makes me wonder just how pathetic the guy’s ego really is. No penis, wallet, or pretty face is worth that kind of abuse. 50 Shades is over, y’all – LET IT DIE ALREADY. (/dismounts soapbox – you can start reading again)
Thanks. That gives us some basic information. Now, about the writing – I know you’re excited…
Why did you start writing?
Bluntly, I started writing to get over my mother’s death. I’d started reading fics as a way of wasting my time and losing myself in sometimes-good other universes, but I very quickly tired of it for several reasons. One, there was a sad lack of really good Godric stories (*flutters lashes* He’s my hero!). Two, there was a sad lack of stories where the hero wasn’t some sort of trite Dom or boring dominating character. I don’t read fics to ‘see’ the hero, or anyone else, abusing, disrespecting, coercing, or subjugating the heroine. Now, off and on I had envisioned what was to become the opening scene in Anticipating, but for some reason at this point I had yet to even think to just pick up a damn keyboard and start writing. So, I kept reading…and bitching…and reading… Then one day I quit my bitching, opened a Word .doc, and the rest is history (even if I still bitch mightily).
What do you enjoy the most about it?
I love the fact that when *I* am writing, I am in complete control of what my fingers type. (My muse just busted a gut laughing at me, btw…) I create the attributes of the hero and heroine, and I create the scenes and scenarios that surround the couple. If there’s a fight, it’s because I created it. If there’s a love scene, it’s because I created it. In my sweet little fantasy world, no one gets raped or abused by the ones who supposedly love them, and while the bad guys are bad, the good guys are always better, and there’s always an HEA because I say so.
And…I absolutely adore when I can change readers’ opinions about a character as I did with Andre. When I can believably re-spin his character using realistic reasoning to the point that convinced haters change their mind and begin loving him, I am full of win!
What do you like least about it?
It’s all on me. Everything from the inception of the idea to proofreading (I’m too bullheaded to use a beta) to posting to, well, everything – it’s all up to me. As a self-described control freak, I love that it’s all up to me, but…yeah, it’s ALL up to me. Thankfully I was smart enough to state in all my profiles that updates will be on absolutely NO set schedule but, even so, there is still a push to update.
That first time hitting publish, how did you feel?
ANGST-RIDDEN!! Will anyone like it? Does it suck? How badly does it suck? It sucks, doesn’t it… There was also a hefty dose of, “Ugh, I am so sick of looking at this fucking chapter – here – go! Be free!”
Where do you get your inspiration?
Usually from music – either from lilting tones or a driving bass, or alpine flights of fancy. I’d like to be able to thank my muse, but she’s a flighty little bitch.
What is your writing area like do you use computer or paper, or both? Or another medium?
Computer – my PC, actually, because I adore a full, real, keyboard. I don’t have the patience to sit and write out my ideas – my brain thinks too fast for me to keep up with a pen or pencil.
Do you use an outline, rough draft or just write?
All of the above. I’ll .txt the general idea, then fill it in a bit, then start a rough draft of a chapter outline, my muse will laugh her cute little ass off at me, then I’ll just start writing.
What do you do while you’re writing (listen to music, TV in the background, etc.)?
Usually I just have the tv on in the background, but sometimes music. My problem is that I tend to get lost in the music and come up with even MORE story ideas even while I’m trying to work on the one before me.
Yes, I am The Muse Whisperer, but I am NOT immune to my own self, dammit.
What annoys you the most when you are trying to write?
The main thing that annoys me is when I can’t find the exact word that I’m wanting – that’s why I have three thesauruses… Another thing I detest is being interrupted. When I’m in that zone there’s nothing in the world between me and my screen as the words flow. Interrupt me and walk away limping. And on a completely related note, humans CAN snarl…
If you have finished a fic, what was your feeling about it?
Whew!! Srsly, I was so glad to have it done…even if it is just a “Part 1”. Lol, it was like an old friend that you were glad visited for a while but that you’re also glad to send on home, too.
What are your favorite fandoms to write?
TB (True Blood), and SVM (Southern Vampire Mysteries) to a lesser degree.
Who are your favorite characters to write?
Godric and my O/C for him, Cara.
I adore Godric. When TB killed him off, they lost an awesome chance to explore and expand upon a brilliant character. Godric has no real back-story and very little canon, so, to me, he’s “fair game”. I can make him into anyone or anything I want, I can give him all the history I want him to have, or none, and I can give him any future I envision for him. He has infinite possibilities, and for some reason, I seem to hear his voice best. I also love the O/C Cara that I invented for him. Neither she nor Godric are perfect, but they fit together with imperfect perfection.
Who are your least favorite characters to write?
My least favorite characters to write are ‘the bad guys’.
I really don’t enjoy bringing angst or drama into any of my stories, and honestly wonder about any writer who does! But – I can’t write a good torture/come-uppance scene without a bad guy to plant in it, now can I? 😀
What is your favorite scene or story you have written and why?
I wish I could list a favorite, but like parents with kids, I don’t have a favorite. Each story thus far has had its own challenges and rewards.
Now, if you’re talking sex scenes, I absolutely adore the first one I ever wrote – Godric masturbating in a nice, warm bubble-bath! I still smile when I think of writing that scene.
What is the most difficult story or scene you have written, and why?
I don’t generally write things that are hard to write because if it’s that hard to write it probably doesn’t belong in a story since I actually like my lead characters.
But, to answer the question, thus far the most difficult scene has been the fight between Andre and Co versus BeauChamps and minions. It was more annoying than anything because I detest writing/choreographing fight scenes.
Do you see any characteristics of yourself in the characters you write?
Yes!! It’s only natural that a writer would write what they’re most familiar with, and I know me best, lol.
Which ones and whom?
My Caras for the most part, but there are parts of me in all my Godrics, too, as well as in Andre and Emma. There’s probably some of me in my Erics, too, but the Erics told me not to be looking that close…
What do you like most about your preferred fandom?
For one thing, I love how very supportive most members of the TB/SVM fandom tend to be. While there is inherently a bit of competition, it’s generally of the healthy kind where you end up challenging yourself to write better, and that’s always a good thing. Also, most members of the TB/SVM fandom are very forgiving when a writer chooses to dump canon and go AU with their fic.
Also, I love the idea of vampires and I’m most familiar with the TB/SVM fandoms, so they’re the ones I write about the most. I love the vamps in TVD, but I’m not all that knowledgeable about their version of canon.
The vampires in the Black Dagger Brotherhood are the ones I adore the most, but JR Ward doesn’t allow writers to write fanfics about her stories and I will definitely honor that.
I like how passionate and protective my preferred TB/SVM vamps are, and how intelligent and crafty they can be. They’re sexy as all fuck, and can be heartbreakingly sweet, too. You can’t beat that!
How would you describe your fics?
I see my stories as a refreshing break from the rigors of life.
While I want to bring a sense of realism to my fics (even if they DO involve vampires and fairies and shifters OH MY!), I want them to be fun, easy, somewhat involving reads that showcase romance and passion, some humor, with lots of respect and consideration shown between the characters. I like my heroes and heroines, and I want to show them being treated well (even if sometimes ineptly) by each other even if by no one else.
In my stories the good guys may wear suits and ties or ass-stompers and leather, but no matter their background or current occupation, in my fics the good guys are definitely good, and good always wins and bad always pays.
I want realistic actions and reactions, but I will always keep in mind that “real life” is sometimes TOO realistic, and that fiction can best be used as an escape from dark, dirty, and depressing. So, I try to write light and airy, but with (I hope!) an interesting plot. While I can’t promise unicorns pooping rainbows, I can say they’ll usually be farting sunshine.
Life is often dark and gritty enough for my readers, and I see no reason to bring even more drama and angst to them even if (or especially because) it’s fictional in nature.
What story would you recommend of your own for a new fan to start first?
Anticipating was the first story I wrote, therefore it’s by far not the best, but it’s complete and that Godric is more in tune with the Godric of perceived TB canon. If you’re new to the TB/SVM fandom, you might not get the inherent irony of The Revealing of Andre since he was a rightfully hated character in SVM – but I did take glorious liberties with his character in the most delicious of non-canon ways. Decisions might be a good one to start with, but that Godric is not in line with perceived TB canon.
*elegant shrug* Jump in where ya want – the water’s not TOO very deep…
Now the HARD questions:
If you could offer a suggestion to someone who is thinking of publishing their first story, what would it be?
Bluntly? Just shut up and do it. Talking your story to death will NOT get it done, and the only way to get over the pre-publishing nerves is to go over your story two more times then just hit that damn Publish button.
If you’re not shy, have a good HONEST friend – not a “yes man” too timid about hurting your feelings, but someone who you KNOW will tell you if it sucks or if you need to go back to English classes – go over your work. Once that part is over, don’t whine…don’t cry…don’t talk it to death…don’t waste time – just publish the damn thing and be done with it.
You can always go back later and fix all the things you will have inevitably missed or forgot to add to those first chapters. Don’t ask me how I know this.
If you could go back in time, and give yourself one word of advice, what would you say? (No Lottery numbers or anything like that!!!)
Just shut the fuck up and do it – but consider a chapter outline BEFORE publishing that first chapter…even if the muse will laugh her (or his) flighty li’l ass off at you. Also, write your character as YOU hear them, not as they might seem from a tv show, book, or movie. Call your story “AU” and you can get away with anything.
What 5 stories would you recommend someone read? Please list fandom, sites and name with pairing.
I tend to not recommend stories because my preferences are generally different from what most readers seem to like. I refuse to read trite Dom/”dominating character” fics or fics that espouse or glorify some sort of abuse, so there goes most of my oddly-preferred fandom.
That being said, I am lucky enough to have some awesome writers I can trust to provide brilliant stories:
Kittyinaz’s (http://kittyinaz.com): True Blood, True Blood/Twilight, Twilight/Vampire Diaries, and Once Upon a Time fics (and many more).
Bertie Bott’s (https://bertiebottwrites.wordpress.com): Twilight/Avengers and Twilight/Vampire Diaries fics.
EricIsMine (http://ericizmine.com) – SVM/TB, but beware – sadly, many of this writer’s amazing works will never be finished.
AlphaEN (http://alphafang.wordpress.com) – SVM, awesome writer, intricate plots, but beware the angst and slower updates.
MySecretOFanFiction (http://mysecretofanfiction.wordpress.com): Great SVM non-angsty smutty porn – great for a quick read
Is there something you wished I asked, and if so, what as well as the answer.
Do you have a writing motto?
Why yes, yes, I do, thank you for asking! This is the motto I created to sum up the entire writing experience as I see it:
“But, in the end, writers are going to write what writers want to write, and readers are going to read what readers want to read, and sometimes the twain should not meet, and that is perfectly fine.” ~Meridian
Name of Character: Andre Paul
Story he is in: The Revealing of Andre
Is (s)he an original Character or a series known? He is well-known in the SVM stories.
Are they in character or Out of Character? Both.
Nickname(s): Depends on the person you ask… To his Mate Emma (and to his great chagrin), he’s known as “honey”, and sometimes “sweetheart”, but to the rest of the vampire world he’s mostly known as “Please don’t kill me, sir.”
Date of Birth: Unsure as to human age, he guesses himself to have lived between 18 and 21 human years, but he was changed 877 years, 275 days and counting ago
Occupation: Second to the reigning Queen of Louisiana, soon to be crowned King of Arkansas, Master Torturer
Stats (Aka Height, hair color, eye color, and so on): Andre is a broad-shouldered, firmly-muscled 6 feet, 3 inches tall, with blond hair, a piercing blue-green eye’d stare, a firm jaw, and a leonine grace which has led to the death of many.
Significant other(s): Emma
Best Friend(s): His brothers-by-turning Sigebert and Wybert, and a slowly-developing semi-bromance with Eric Northman…and Emma.
Enemies(s): All who would harm his Mate. Oh, yeah, and anyone who would harm his Maker and Queen Sophie-Anne, too, of course.
Any noticeable Scars, Tattoos, or other markings: Faint, barely-noticable scarring on his back.
If they could have a Theme Song, which would it be? A blend of Def Leppard’s “Hysteria” with Crazy Town’s hidden track “You Are The One”
What is their favorite Movie? Movies?!He doesn’t have time to waste on movies – there are simply too many prisoners and soon-to-be prisoners needing his special touch! And he must see to the entire security system of the palace, plus he’s having the new security systems installed in the new palace he’ll be sharing with his Emma in Arkansas… (But Emma has noticed a rather large collection of action/adventure movies in his quarters, with a certain number of titles held off to the side, including a box set of X-Files, The Manchurian Candidate, Soylent Green (with a huge X marked over it), The Thomas Crown Affair, Angels & Demons, Nineteen Eighty-Four, and The Da Vinci Code – all of which have obviously been handled quite often…)
What is something that the fans don’t know about your character?
Even though he is known internationally as The Master Torturer, he doesn’t enjoy that hobby because of the torturing aspect. To him, the act of torturing isn’t the important part. He became The Master Torturer because he likes to enact his own brand of ‘appropriate’ justice on those deserving of his talents. Also, he has never once tortured a woman; instead, he simply gifts them with a quick death.
This author is my featured author and I will be dropping reviews for her stories for you to get an idea of the stories.
Thanks for reading!
