Interview with BiteMyTongue

Hey, so If you’re reading this then you must have agreed to be interviewed 🙂 So thank you for taking your time to fill this out for everyone! Usually it’s BertieBott who does the crossover sections but well, I couldn’t resist!

So we are going to start out with some basic information for all of you.

Can you please tell the people reading this your name?

My name is Adriana, though I really hate going by this which is why I go by Ade most times. My Author name is BiteMyTongue

Where do you like to post, and can you give us the site of your preferred medium?

I post to my site:

What do you like to snack when writing?

Candy… A lot of candy. Not the sweet kind though, usually the spicy mango lollipops. I have this strange need to have one whenever I’m writing… that’s not weird is it?

Like the question above but what do you listen to when you write, do you have a playlist for certain stories?

This could take forever… I have a different playlist for the multi-chapter stories and a default playlist for my one-shots. Usually I listen to, Adele, Secondhand Serenade, Mayday Parade, Go Radio, and Twenty One Pilots. Those are usually the main ones I listen to when I’m trying to write. Though if I were to go into detail this list could go on forever.

Tell us something about yourself that you think your fans would love to know about:

I have a speech problem… Is that interesting? When I was a baby I fell down a flight of stairs in my stroller and one of the side effects of the fall was speech problems. I have trouble pronouncing some words and at times if I get nervous I stutter.  If I seem awkward to any of you, it’s because until recently I rarely spoke to anyone out of fear of being made fun of. I’m sure everyone knows what it’s like to be made fun of. Really, because of this I’m a nerd… yeah that’s my excuse for being such a nerd.

Thanks.  That gives us some basic information.  Now, about the writing –   I know you’re excited…

Why did you start writing?

Like I mentioned above, I’m a nerd. I graduated high school really early and the summer before I started college, I was really nervous about starting college. It was going to be the first time in years that I was going to be in a room with people I didn’t know, and that terrified me. I became really quiet and I sort of just retreated into myself, and then one day I read fan fiction. From there I was like “I could totally do this.” When I started writing I found that it really helped making things easier for me. It gave me something to do with my time, and what better way can you spend your days then writing stories about the characters you love?

What do you enjoy the most about it?

The people. I’ve always been really pessimistic about people and I used to believe the worst in everyone, but writing fanfiction really changed that. There were people who didn’t know me at all, but continued to encourage me to write with their comments. That’s what I love the most, writing fanfiction is like joining this community of really amazing people who are just as nerdy as you are, and there’s no judging.

What do you like least about it?

Writer’s block? Does that count? I love writing, but when my mind gets fogged and I can’t continue a story I get this feeling of letting the people who read it down, and that’s the worst feeling to have.

That first time hitting publish, how did you feel?

Nervous. I remember I had to write an English paper, but instead I was like, “Why not write a chapter instead?” And when I clicked published I shut down my laptop hid my phone under my pillow and spent the rest of the day outside just because I was nervous on what people would say about the story… I did eventually go back and write up that paper for my English class though.

Where do you get your inspiration?

Music. I’ve always had a thing for listening to a song and just focusing on the lyrics. That’ll eventually lead to an idea for a story. Stories like, Where Are You Now, You and I, Say You Love Me, and a lot more have all started with a song. I got the idea for Connected by the Soul by listening to Secondhand Serenade one night before I went to sleep. And Reaper Twins was hugely inspired by the album Monster’s In the Closet by Mayday Parade. When a song has good lyrics I can always find inspiration from it.

What is your writing area like do you use computer or paper, or both?  Or another medium?

I use my computer. Writing by hand gets me distracted, I remember I tried once during a psychology class and the characters ended up doing a musical number… In recollection it was a very good song from high school musical…

Do you use an outline, rough draft or just write?

I just write… I change my mind a lot when I’m writing so using an outline or anything of the sort just ends up becoming useless since I never follow it.

What do you do while you’re writing (listen to music, TV in the background, etc.)?

I always have either C.S.I. Miami or Criminal Minds in the background when I write. And I’m always listening to music as well. Now that I think of it I waste a lot of energy with everything I have on when I’m writing…

What annoys you the most when you are trying to write?

When one of my family members hovers over my shoulder trying to see what I’m doing. It puts me on edge and I can’t focus. It’s the worst thing when I’m writing.

If you have finished a fic, what was your feeling on it?

I was really sad… A lot sadder than I thought I would be. I remember when I was writing the last chapter of Enchantress I was excited because the characters got their happily ever after, but then when I posted it I finally realized that it was done. There was nothing else I could do, I remember I was close to tears.

What are your favorite fandoms to write?

Twilight, because it was the first thing I ever fell in love with.

And Vampire Diaries, because I remember thinking how ridiculously awesome the bad guy was. (AKA Klaus)

Who are your favorite characters to write

I have to choose? Give me a second to think this through…

Bella, Klaus and Henrik.

Bella: She’s changeable. I always think that Bella has this ability to continue to change, and that makes writing her more entertaining. She was also the first character I ever really related to.

Klaus: He’s the bad guy. I love the bad guys in shows and movies, and Klaus is by far my favourite. With him it’s like peeling an onion, there’s always a new layer that shows this completely different side of him… I just finished seeing Shrek and Shrek says something similar about himself I couldn’t help but think of Klaus.

Henrik: He’s a clean slate. He appears in the show a very short amount of time which leaves his character close to new. There’s nothing you really know about his character and that just makes him easier to become the perfect character for any story.

Who are your least favorite characters to write?

Damon. Elena. Bonnie.

Damon: I love Damon. I think his character is just awesome, but there are just so high hopes for his character that it makes writing for him very intimidating.

Elena: I think she’s whiny. I don’t like her character too much because it bothers me how she ruins every plan they [Damon and Stefan] come up with. I don’t like to write her is because I can’t in any way relate to her character.

Bonnie: She hates for no reason. I’m fairly certain I don’t like her character because she tried to kill Klaus… Is it strange I hold a grudge against a fictional character for trying to kill another fictional character?

What is your favourite scene or story you have written and why?

There’s a scene in Connected By the soul (Chapter 3) in which Klaus is observing the connection between Henrik and Bella. I didn’t like this scene when I wrote it at the time and I debated a lot on just deleting it. But then I started to really enjoy Klaus’s perspective on Henrik’s love interest. I look back on that scene a lot when I’m writing Klaus in this story. I think it sort of sets in motion the bond between the three of them which is really important to the story.

What is the most difficult story or scene you have written, and why?

Chapter Seven in Reaping of New Orleans. It’s a pretty recent scene where Bella has to finally let go of her dad and writing this scene was a huge pain. I really debated getting rid of Charlie. I had to keep telling myself that he had to die and that it was for the best. It was one of the saddest scenes I’ve ever had to write and it really made me question whether Charlie should die. There was a lot of second guessing when it came to this scene.

Do you see any characteristics in the characters you write?

Yes, all the time.

Which ones and whom?

I guess the most important one is the respect towards family. I grew up with a very close knit family, and I guess that’s something the characters and I have in common. In the end family is the most important thing and I think a lot of the characters feel the same, especially the Mikaelsons.

What do you like most about your preferred fandom?

I can always add something new that’s supernatural and it still fits into the story. If I decide to make Bella something special it’s not going to ruin the story, because really what supernatural creature doesn’t find themselves in Mystic Falls?

How would you describe your fics?

Hmm… Special… no, that’s not it… different? Yeah, that’s better. I see my stories as something different as I always try to make sure they stand apart from my other stories.

What story would you recommend of your own for a new fan to start first?

Reaper Twins… it’s one of my favourite stories to write and it seems others really like the idea of Bella being the daughter of death.

Now the HARD questions:

If you could offer a suggestion to someone who is thinking of publishing their first story, what would it be?

I know posting a story is scary, I go through that feeling every time I post anything. It’s terrifying and in the moment building up to clicking that post button your worst enemy is going to be yourself. No matter what negative thoughts you may have, you have to keep pushing through, and you have to know that it’s not as bad as it seems. You can’t listen to the negative thoughts in your head, but to that little voice inside you that’s telling you to keep going.

I hope this was a good answer.

If you could go back in time, and give yourself one word of advice, what would you say?  (No Lottery numbers or anything like that!!!)

There are a number of things I’d tell myself, one of them including not eating that chicken burger that gave me food poisoning, but that’s not important.

I guess I’d tell myself, that it’s never as bad as it seems. There’s always going to be someone somewhere that isn’t going to like you, and they might make fun of you, but it’s not as bad as you think. Eventually it will pass and you’ll move on, there’s no point on dwelling on the things that aren’t important.

What 5 stories would you recommend someone read?  Please list fandom, sites and name with pairing.

  • Gambit’s Siren by TheDarkestFallingStar. X-Men/Twilight (Gambit/Bella)

It’s a really good story, and the author has some really great stories, but who doesn’t love the x-men? I thought everyone agreed that comic books were the best? Or was that just my belief?

  • Rising Dawn by DodgerHolden. Twilight (Jasper/Bella)

Who doesn’t love Jasper? This author has some amazing stories with Jasper and Bella staring in them, they’re some of my favourite stories to read. This particular story is still in progress unlike many of her other ones.

  • Magic in The Muggle World by NJ Coffee Queen Harry Potter (Hermione/ Draco)

This is one of my favourite pairings and this author has countless stories with the two of them together.

  • I’ll Show You Madness by wonderwoundedhearers Batman Begins/Dark Knight/ Twilight (Joker, Bella.)

I really love bad guys and who’s better than the Joker? This story is amazing, it shows this different side to Bella that makes it all the better.

  • The Real Us by Seel’vor Harry Potter (Hermione/ Harry Potter)

This story really made me question a lot of things in Harry Potter…

Is there something you wished I asked, and if so, what as well as the answer.

No, I think you did a great job, and I thought this was really fun. Hope my answers weren’t too boring for it, I tried to be as truthful as I could get.

Thanks lovely for taking the time to do this!!
